Ghizer, Yasin & Shandoor — 7 Days

The journey begins at midnight, rolling through Hazara and into the Kaghan Valley as the stars fade over Mansehra. A hearty breakfast near Naran breaks the drive before the road climbs steeply to Lulusar Lake and Babusar Pass at 4,173m — the gateway to Diamer. After descending to the Indus, a short stop at the famous Junction of the World's Highest Mountain Ranges lets you take in four great ranges at once. Lunch near Jaglot, then the final stretch to Gilgit city.

After breakfast in Gilgit, head west through the Ghizer district towards Yasin Valley — one of the most remote and culturally intact valleys in the Karakoram. A short stop at the Ishkoman Bridge over the jade-green Ghizer River, then a riverside lunch and check-in at Fort Hotel in the heart of Yasin. The afternoon is free to explore the valley on foot — ancient fortifications, apricot orchards and a sky unmarred by city light. Dinner and overnight at the fort.

Leave Yasin and drive down to the Ghizer River road, turning west toward Phandar. The approach to Phandar Lake is dramatic — the road rounds a bend and the turquoise water fills the valley below. Lunch at the famous Dream Island restaurant on the lakeshore, followed by a long afternoon at the riverside, crossing the suspension bridge and watching the light shift on the water. Camping overnight at Dream Island with dinner under the poplars.

An early start for the day trip to Shandoor — the world's highest polo ground at 3,734m. The road climbs through the meadows of Langar before emerging onto the vast plateau of Shandoor Top, where a glacial lake sits at the foot of the pass. A light lunch at the top, then descend back through the afternoon light, pausing at Golaghmuli to catch the sunset over the Phandar side of the valley. Return for dinner and a second night at Dream Island.

Leave Phandar and head east along the Ghizer valley, stopping at Khalti Lake — a hidden alpine lake near Gupis that rivals Phandar for colour but sees a fraction of the visitors. After time at the lake, continue to Yasin for a second night at Fort Hotel. Settle in for dinner and rest ahead of tomorrow's long drive back to Gilgit.

The drive back to Gilgit follows the Ghizer River downstream, with two cultural stops that most tours skip. Gahkuch Fort perches on a rocky crag above the river, offering a window into the pre-Islamic history of the region. A few kilometres further, ancient Buddha rock carvings are carved into the cliff face — a Silk Road remnant from the 5th century CE. Lunch in Gilgit, followed by check-in at Dumaani Inn and free time to explore the Nili Market bazaar in the evening.

An early breakfast and a 7am departure from Gilgit for the long drive home. The route retraces the Babusar road, stopping briefly at Lulusar and Babusar Pass on the way over. Lunch near the village of Baesar in the Kaghan Valley, then — as a final adventure — river rafting on the Kunhar River near Naran before the last stretch to Islamabad.
