Chitral & Kalash Valley

Depart Islamabad early and drive north through Nowshera and Dir, entering the dramatic Hindu Kush via the Lowari Tunnel. Emerge into the wide Chitral valley and follow the Kunar River to Chitral city. Check in, walk along the river at sunset, and spot the ancient Chitral Fort across the water.

Morning visit to the magnificent Chitral Fort — the last great fortress of the Hindu Kush, once home to the Mehtar of Chitral. Explore the old bazaar for traditional Chitrali caps, woodwork, and gems. Afternoon drive up towards Shandur Plateau for panoramic views of the Hindu Kush at 3,700 metres.

Drive into the largest of the three Kalash valleys — Bumburet. Here, the Kalash people live exactly as their ancestors did, in wooden houses decorated with carved skulls of ibex and goats. Visit the Kalash museum, walk through the village, watch traditional dances if a festival is in season, and meet the community.

Explore the quieter, more pristine Rumbur valley. Visit a traditional Kalash home, watch women weaving their famous headdresses (kupa), and hike to viewpoints above the valley. Afternoon return to Chitral for a farewell dinner.

Final morning in Chitral — one last walk by the river, last-minute shopping at the bazaar. Drive back through the Lowari Tunnel and south to Islamabad, arriving by evening with a deep appreciation for one of the world's most remarkable surviving cultures.
